Why Walls Won't Work
In his sweeping account of life within the United States-Mexican border, Michael Dear traces the border zone's long history of interaction and mutual support. Today, this vibrant zone of cross-border economic, cultural and social merging is in danger of fading away because of highly restrictive American immigration and security policies, as well as violence along Mexico's side of the border. The very existence of this 'third nation,' occupied by both Americans and Mexicans, is being seriously challenged. Through a series of evocative portraits of contemporary border communities, Dear shows that the potential for revitalizing this 'in-between' nation still remains, and indeed, is vital to the well-being of both nations.
