BTC vs. Harbor Bay at Harbor Bay
    - Veronica El Baze, Captain

The 8.0 Mixed had a “cliff hanger” match against Harbor Bay! We won 2-1 but boy was it close!!
Roberta Sung and BJ Miller played line #2 against two extreme extroverts who were cheerful and chatty on the court! This didn’t seem to bother them until they lost their 4-1 lead in the 1st set, losing five straight games! Their opponents obviously made some adjustments but mainly dominating the center of the net and hitting winner after winner. Roberta and BJ knew they also had to do something different as they were getting killed in the 2nd set. They had to put their joint X number of years of tennis experience and came up with a drastic change of strategy – LOBBING their opponents to death! It worked!!! At 5-4, 40-15 for the match, their opponent serving, Roberta makes an amazing angle shot on the 2nd match point, they hit 317 more lobs to take the 2nd set in a tiebreaker and the 3rd set 6-2! It was a team work of a successful execution, patience and lobbing that ultimately got their opponents out of their game! Bravo Roberta and BJ!

Ellen Narasaki and Rich Green played line #3 against players who in the 1st set were far less consistent than they were. They won the 1st set handily by being steadier than their opponents. The 2nd set was a different story. Their opponents seemed to have gotten into some rhythm. The male player started sending them canonballs as his 1st serve which left Ellen and Rich defenseless and also poaching more. The rallies became longer with a lot of variety from drop volleys, lobs, and over heads! They took the 2nd set from Ellen and Rich after a tie breaker and ended up winning the supertiebreaker. We all know that supertiebreakers are hard and it can go either way, and it this case, the match was up for grabs but Rich and Ellen couldn’t quite reach it! There is always a next time. (1-6, 7-6, 10-6). Great effort!

Veronica El Baze and John Ward played line #1 against players who were pretty steady and clearly had a game. John and Veronica decided from the very beginning that they will play controlled aggression, consistency and placement. This strategy definitely worked as they dominated in the 1st set with a 4-1 lead. This changed as soon as Veronica made a line call that her male opponent didn’t like and continued to question John if he agreed with Veronica’s call! Little did Veronica know, this was the beginning of gamesmanship! Veronica fell for it and as a consequence, lost her serve. Still, Veronica and John closed the 1st set at 6-3. Veronica made more line calls and her male opponents BELIEVED ALL his balls were in even though he was behind the baseline on the other side of the net . After being miserable and tense, John and Veronica lost the 2nd set 1-6. Almost 2 ½ hours of playing, they start the supertiebreaker. It was a roller coaster ride for the spectators, as the scores were fairly close, Veronica making more “out” line calls, male opponents completely convinced that she is cheating. Veronica and John having 2 match point chances but couldn’t close it but finally won at 14-12! What a relief! As everyone approaches the net to shake hands, the male opponent REFUSED to shake Veronica’s hand! Veronica came out of the court, greeted by BJ, Rich and Josh, reassuring her that it was not her problem and that unfortunately the male opponent was a … She was even more comforted when the opposing captain and team mates came up to her to apologize and reassured her that she made the right line calls! The victory became even sweeter when they found out that it was their win that got the team a “W” and Cliff, emailed to tell Veronica that their opponents were undefeated until that day!

10 Mixed Home Match against San Francisco Tennis Club
    - Mai Ichikawa, Captain

    Hello everyone,

First of all, thank you weather gods for giving us perfect sunny conditions, which gave us the energy our team needed to complete another successful victory, congratulations!

Once again, our couple of the year team, Meghan and Jeff, pulled out a comfortable win with a score of 6-2,6-2. Even though their opponents tried some Aussie on them, it only fed into their fire, making both M & J carve out better returns and more aggressive shot making. Well done you two!

My hubby and I were second off the court, winning in straights 6-3,6-4. Brent's shoulder cooperated with his serve which in turn gave our opponents the usual trouble- great big serve followed by a juicy return right into my forehand volley, thank you very much...won't say the same on my backhand side though, ha!

The match of the day was mastered by our world famous team of Kim Lackey and Brian Kaplan. First time playing together so they started off a bit short, losing the first set in a close one- 5-7, no biggy. They regrouped and began taking charge and winning the second 6-4. They chose to play the super TB which is always exciting and nerve racking for both players and spectators. But the momentum remained cool and smooth for K & B, winning the super in flying colors, yippy! Great 3-0 win over HP, we needed that one.

We are still tied for 2nd so like I said before, every match counts and we have 3 to go. If we win them, we move onto sectionals. Let's make that happen! Your Cap, Mai

8.0 Mixed Match against Chabot College (Road match)
    - Veronica El Baze, Captain

The 8.0 Mixed team had an "AWAY" match against Lakeridge. Unfortunately, we
experienced our 2nd loss today, 1-2! We did better when we played them on
    our home courts.

Thanks to Francine Ostrem who saved us from defaulting a line by joining the
team last minute! Welcome! She and her partner, Rich Green won their match
despite a wrist injury! They played a no-nonsense first set, 6-2, and as
what usually happens after winning the first set so decisively, Francine and
Rich relaxed and "fell asleep", according to Francine, in the second set.
They were up 4-0 but lost the 2nd set! No worries as our team took care of
business in the tiebreaker. 6-2, 4-6, 1-0. Way to be tough!

Our brother and sister combo, Marci and Cliff, who ended up playing
Lakeridge's #1 doubles' team. Both their opponents were strong. The male
opponent had an amazing forehand and handled anything that went over his
head with ease. His female partner was a top flight 4.0. player! She had
excellent court positioning, great anticipation, good at the net and simply
didn't miss. According to Cliff, he and Marci are still learning how to
dance together on the court and what shots to hit. Next time, perhaps being
more aggressive and definitely not giving them free points will make a
    difference! 3-6, 3-6.

Veronica and Harrison played together against a great server who returned
everything to Harrison's shoelace and played crosscourt angled rallies with
Veronica who played on the ad court. There were very few rallies especially
in the first set since he just kept hitting winners after winners. His
lefty partner was also very good. She was very tight at the net and ready
to angle off a winner! Both had their forehands in the middle but then
again our male opponent's backhand was also as good as his forehand. I
didn't remember him being this good when I watched a few points he played
during the first match at BTC. He told me after the match, that he indeed
played well that day. Good for him, bad for Harrison and myself as we
definitely didn't play to our full potential. 1-6, 4-6.

Rain, rain go away so we can practice, practice, and get better!

UPCOMING MATCH: @ BTC - Sunday, March 1st @ 2pm against Oakland Hills.
    Reserved seating only!

10 Mixed Home Match against San Francisco Tennis Club
    - Mai Ichikawa, Captain

In Japan, the number "4" means death, so as a custom, you do not give gifts in increments of 4. It is considered bad luck, bad omen, and that is the entire reason why we ended up losing this last match, the dark knight number four. We started off a bit short on teams, unfortunately, our secret weapon and co-captain Carolyn Wei did a number on her knee a few days before and could not compete. She would have teamed up with the big, bad "Baer". They still came out to the club for moral support and a sexy six pack!

The San Francisco tennis club is loaded with top players and sure enough, they brought out their posse on Saturday, only the best. First off was Brian Kaplan and myself. We competed well but fell short on a bunch of the close games and could not take them when we had our chances, losing in straights 6-2,6-4. We'll get em next time BK!

Another close match but not one for the good guys was performed by our sweet duet team of Meghan and Jeff. In the first set, being down 1-4, they gathered their composer and began fighting their way back in, scaring their opponents into a tie-breaker but ended up in unfortunate consequences of 5-7. Second set ended up closer than the actual score, the bad guys got us, 6-7, 3-6. Great battle you two!

Thanks again BTC for cheering us on and keeping us all in battle mode. Oh, and especially to Alissa C for her everlasting good cheers and crafty display of oohs and aahs! Signing off for now....your captain, Mai Ich-Abe

8.0 Mixed Match against Chabot College (Road match)
    - Veronica El Baze, Captain

The 8.0 team had its 1st loss today to Chabot College. They were a strong team, specifically their male players. We all had a very hard time returning our male opponents' serves, whether power but mainly with wicked spins! Unfortunately, I couldn’t watch my team players’ matches as John and I had our hands full but here is a report based on what they communicated to me.

Nadia and Brian tried their hardest but just couldn't get a rhythm therefore losing 1-6, 1-6. Mary Liz and Jim lost quickly in the 1st set, struggling to return their male opponents serves that Jim could only lob back. They played tough in the 2nd set, trying hard not to get broken, taking it to a tiebreaker where they fell behind a point or two but were never able to recover, therefore losing 3-6, 6-7! They were so close to taking it to a 3rd set! Veronica and John partnered and struggled with their male opponents serves especially in the 1st set where they lost. He mainly served his wicked underhand serves to Veronica, letting her know only after the match that he wanted to stay away from her backhand returns. Second set was a different story as John and I dominated from the beginning by breaking both our opponents. We slowed down the pace and went more for placements and thanks to my partner John, who reminded me to take the serves earlier before that wicked spin threw me off. We came very close to winning, breaking down our female opponent's serves but her male partner just stepped it up even more. It was so close 3-6, 6-2, 4-6!

Great fight team! Next time we meet them, it will be in our home courts with a huge BTC crowd to cheer us on!

10 Mixed Home Match against Claremont Resort & Spa
    - Mai Ichikawa, Captain
But not so happy due to the unfortunate turn of events after Sunday's match at home. I won't go into too much detail since we lost, but I will say thanks to our superheroes who saved face for us by winning a very important point for the team, therefore not going down in flames, 1-2. Good going Carolyn and Brian! They duked it out til the very end, after losing the first set 6-1, C & B talked strategy and slowly but surely took the second set 6-3. I'm not a big fan of super-TB's because it's like sudden death to me, but they chose it and brought their opponents to their grave, final score, 11-9. Phew! Congrats you two!

We (the Abels, and Meghan & Jeff) all lost in straight sets to some tough opponents but when I look back, I know what I need to work on for next time. We'll just have to show them who's boss on their turf!

So we are still in the lead over Claremont because we beat them last time 3-0. Because it's such a tough season, every single match counts so let's be ready to put up our dukes and fight, fight, fight! See you next time...your captain, Mai Ichikawa-Abel

News from our Intra_BTC play

  • Second Annual BTC Men’s & Women’s Round Robin Singles League, running this year approximately from February 1 to March 31, 2009. The league is an informal circuit of singles matches. It is free and guaranteed no-hassle. Jason will provide men, and Pepi will provide women with a schedule of 6 to 8 weekly singles matches, arranged to give you some opponents who will be a challenge for you and some for whom you will be a challenge. You call or email your opponent and find a time to play. There are no defaults – if someone gets injured, has to travel a lot, etc., you just don’t play that match. Match format is up to the players. You report who won, but not necessarily the score, to me. There will be some kind of prize for the most wins and the best sportsmanship.

The league is open to all BTC men and women.
    Men, please let Jason Marks (JasonMarks@comcast.net) know if you want to play;
Women, please let Pepi Ross (PepiRoss@comcast.net) know if you want to play.
If you don’t know the head of your league, please mention your rating (3.5, 4.5, etc.) or some other members who you play relatively even with, so Pepi or Jason has an idea where to place you.

Deadline to respond is Saturday, January 10. (The schedules will be drawn on Sunday 1/11, then Pepi & Jason will be traveling until Feb 1, so once the schedule is put together it will be near impossible to add players.)
